Prof. Watanabe's research interest has been mainly concerned with "ionics" and "nano-structured materials". Ionics has become an important scientific area for the realization of key materials for advanced electrochemical devices, which supports a sustainable society. He is one of research leaders in the fields of ionic liquids and polymer electrolytes in the world. Recent research activity has been expanded to nano-structured materials, including intelligent hydrogels that change their structural color in response to the external stimuli. He has published more than 300 papers and 50 books in these and relating fields.

Research Topics :

1,
Ionics of Ionic Liquids and Polymer Electrolytes and the Materials design for Lithium Batteries, Fuel Cells, Solar Cells, and Actuators.
2,
Supramolecular Assembly of Polymers and Nano-materials in Ionic Liquids.
3,
Nano-structured Materials Including Intelligent Hydrogels that Change Their Structural Color in Response to the External Stimuli and 3D-Ordered Electrodes.
4,
Protein Electrochemistry for Bio-sensors and Bio-interfaces.
